Edit a documentary
Sync multicam interviews by sound, edit them by text, grade, redact private details, and deliver a file and a timeline for Premiere or Resolve.
The goal is interviews shot on two or more cameras, edited by text, graded, with private details redacted, delivered as a file and as a timeline for Premiere or Resolve.
1. Sync the cameras by sound#
- In the "Library", select the camera clips, and a separate audio recorder file if you have one.
- From the item menu choose "Create Multi-Camera Source Sequence…" and set "Synchronize by" to "Audio".
- Put the multicam source sequence in your edit.
- Open the Program Monitor's "Multi-Camera View" (Shift+0) and switch angles live with 1–9 while playing.
"Auto Switch…" on a multicam clip cuts to whoever is talking. See Edit multicam footage.
2. Edit by text, through the multicam#
Transcribe the sequence. The words of a multicam clip come from its active audio angle, and deleting words inside a multicam clip cuts that clip in place: the pieces stay multicam clips, so you can still switch angles afterwards. See Edit by text.
3. Grade#
Open the "Color" workspace. Use "Auto" or the "Color" panel's sections, set a good shot as the reference in "Compare & Match" and "Match" the others, and check your work on the "Scopes". Auto and Match work on multicam clips too. See Grade colour.
4. Redact private details#
Redact a face or a licence plate in the Source Monitor, with a look ("Blur", "Mosaic" or "Solid") and/or a sound ("Mute" or "Bleep"), and let "Track an object (AI)" follow it.
A redaction belongs to the source, so it follows the footage into every sequence, export and nested clip. Bleeped words also read as bleeped in transcripts and captions, and redacted regions are never sent to a cloud service in clear. See Mask, track and redact.
5. Deliver#
- A file: in the "Export" tab, choose "YouTube 1080p", "ProRes 422 HQ" (a master) or "Audio only", and set "Captions" to "Burn in", "SRT file" or "VTT file". See Export a video.
- A timeline for Premiere, Resolve or Final Cut: choose File > "Export Timeline…" and pick FCP7 XML (for Premiere), FCPXML (Resolve or Final Cut), OTIO or EDL. The report lists what was carried, approximated or dropped, and nested and multicam sequences go along. See Move timelines between editors.
